GONÇALO PIRES
Gonçalo Pires began his cello studies at the age of six and graduated with distinction from the Braga Conservatory. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London under Josephine Knight, where he was awarded the prestigious Martin/Hooton Concerto Prize for soloists and the Clarence Myerscough Award for academic excellence. He completed his Master’s degree in Performance with Hannah Roberts in 2025. As a soloist and chamber musician, he performs regularly across the UK and Portugal, notably with pianist Eri Yamamoto, violinist Raffaele Pagano and the accordionist Flávio Rodrigues in the AccordiCello Duo. In 2025, the duo was awarded the Craxton Memorial Trust Award, which supported the recording of their debut CD. Gonçalo has collaborated with renowned ensembles such as the Doric String Quartet, London Contemporary Soloists, Kaleidoscope Chamber Collective, Orquestra Filarmónica de Braga (as principal cellist), the London Film Music Orchestra and the English Touring Opera. He has won prizes in several international competitions, including Cidade do Fundão (Portugal), North Music Competition (Sweden), Soncello Competition (Spain), and Capela (Portugal), and has participated in masterclasses with renowned cellists such as Marc Coppey, Gary Hoffman, Ludwig Quandt, and many others.
Raffaele Pagano Curriculum
Raffaele Pagano is an Italian violinist and composer. After being awarded as first prize in more than 20 competitions in Italy and playing in the theatre San Carlo Di Napoli and as concertmaster in several orchestras of his native city Naples, he moved to London to study with the legendary professor of Royal Academy of Music Hu Kun (the longest pupil of Lord Yehudi Menuhin). In London he became the leader of London Arte Chamber Orchestra and in 2020 started to compose music receiving his first prize in the 2nd edition of the international composition competition “Premio Metastasio” of Scalea (Italy). His music is predominantly bound to the emotions and real feelings that Raffaele put on his violin first with improvisations and then with compositions. He plays regularly with Hastings Philharmonic Orchestra and he is the concertmaster of London Concert Sinfonia with whom he made recently a premiere with his composition “Freedom” for solo violin and orchestra. Raffaele plays on a priceless violin made especially for him from the father of his first violin teacher 26 years ago and a precious bow from Cremona which he won in the international violin competition “Luigi Denza” 15 years ago.

Join Our Gongfu Tea Gathering in Cambridge – 14 August
You’re warmly invited to the next Shusong Gongfu Tea Gathering, hosted by the Cambridge Chinese Tea Group in collaboration with UK Education Garden — where education meets cultural heritage in meaningful ways.
Held at the tranquil Namaste Village, a beloved Indian vegetarian restaurant in central Cambridge, this gathering is a chance to slow down, sip mindfully, and explore the depth of Chinese tea artistry.
We’ll showcase three exquisite Phoenix Dancong teas, all lovingly crafted by Yu Yingfeng, a nationally recognised inheritor of China’s intangible cultural heritage in tea-making:
✨ Ya Shi Xiang (Duck **** Aroma) – bold, floral, and surprisingly elegant
🍯 Mi Yun (Honey Rhyme) – richly roasted with deep, honeyed undertones
🌸 Old Bush Baxian (Eight Immortals) – floral, sweet, and long in finish
Each tea will be brewed using the Shusong Standard Gongfu Method, highlighting the harmony of flavour, aroma, and ritual. Whether you’re a tea novice or a seasoned enthusiast, you’ll leave inspired and grounded.
In line with UK Education Garden’s mission to cultivate global citizens, this event encourages cross-cultural appreciation, mindful learning, and community — all through the profound act of sharing tea.
The Cambridge Chinese Tea Group continues to grow, with a shared goal of restoring pesticide-free, premium Chinese teas to their rightful place as a refined experience in the UK.
